Cordillera Azul National Park Project : Protecting Peru's Breathtaking Biodiversity
Project Type: REDD+ Project Developer: CIMA Emission Reductions to date: Over 49,900,000 Nestled within the captivating expanse of central Peru's lowland and montane forests lies the Cordillera Azul REDD+ Project, spanning an impressive 1,351,190 hectares. This designated national park stands as a sanctuary for an astounding array of life, housing over 1,000 distinct vertebrate species and more than 6,000 unique plant species. Among these inhabitants are species such as the Peruvian Spider Monkey, the Silvery Woolly Monkey, and the Giant Otter, all of which find their sanctuary within this vital ecosystem. Prior to the project's inception, neighbouring communities depended heavily on practices like subsistence agriculture, resulting in deforestation. As such, the project has attempted to alleviate this problem by introducing other sustainable forms of livelihoods. An example of which is the establishment of the Kari Isa Xanu Crafts Association, empowering Yamino community women to utilize plant-based fabric dyeing techniques and traditional designs to craft textiles. This not only preserves cultural heritage but also provides sustainable income sources, nurturing a harmonious coexistence between communities and their environment. At its core, the Cordillera Azul National Park (PNCAZ) REDD+ Project safeguards an extensive tract of pristine lower-montane forest that remains a beacon of natural wonder within Peru. The project's overarching aim stands as a testament to harmonious coexistence, where nature's resilience thrives alongside sustainable human livelihoods. Join us in safeguarding this remarkable ecosystem for generations to come.
