Dr. John Kilani

Dr. John Kilani is a seasoned leader with a remarkable career in shaping global climate strategies. Formerly overseeing the Sustainable Development Mechanisms Programme at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), he played a pivotal role in carbon market negotiations for the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement.

 

With diverse roles spanning industries, Dr. Kilani's influence is far-reaching. His legacy is one of sustainability leadership and a profound impact on climate policies and markets.

EDUCATION

EXPERIENCE

Dr. Kilani obtained his Doctoral - PhD, (Civil Engineering) from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Dr John Kilani served as the director for the Sustainable Development Mechanisms (SDM) Programme at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), where he oversaw negotiations on the operationalization of carbon markets, both in the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. The SDM Programme was also responsible for supporting the regulatory Bodies for the Kyoto project-based mechanisms.

Prior to joining the United Nations, he worked as Lead Environmental Engineer at Qatar Petroleum (2005-2008), Vice President for Sustainable Development at Anglovaal Mining Company in South Africa (2002-2005), and various positions at the South African Chamber of Mines, including the Senior Executive responsible for Safety, Health and Environment (1994-2002).

Dr John Kilani has also served on the boards of Johannesburg Water, The Mpumalanga Environmental Council, the Global Carbon Council and the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market.
